Well, the first tip is, as with everything in life, you get what you pay for. This applies both to the client, as well as the company. We must pay our staff a reasonable wage and bonus's for good work (incentive program), provide good equipment, insurance and legal back-up.
The client must expect that, when they request a service, there will be fee's and charges associated with that service. Any variation to the service, especially at short notice, will involve further costs. We value our staff, so should you, they are there for your protection.

As has been demonstrated by many terrorist bombers, the first blast may not be the last. A method utilised by early terror role models, such as the IRA and PLO, amongst others, was to have an initial blast then have a secondary blast aimed to initiate when emergency services had arrived and had packed the scene with carers and onlookers.
This gave a true indication of the motives behind the attack: To create as much carnage, and publicity, as possible for the 'cause'. This has caused victims to suffer and die whilst carers and investigators were held back, awaiting clearance to enter.
A secondary effect of this hesitation is the allowance of more 'breathing space' for offenders to make good their escape. Even suicide bombers have a support network, and very, very, rarely work alone (yes, there have been exceptions). Sometimes they even take along their own camera crew to record the event.
A suicide bombing may also be part of a pattern of bombings, close together, as was demonstrated by the Bali bombing and in a similar vein the 911 disaster in America. It may be associated with an assault with weapons, such as recent attacks in India.
This is something to bear in mind when in the vicinity of a blast. Some guidelines are:
1. If you are in a safe place do not leave it to 'have a look'. 2. Leave the bomb area as quickly and safely as you can, if possible (including injured but able to move). 3. Bear in mind that this may be a diversion, keep away from windows, keep away from crowded area's. 4. If you are in a crowded area, leave. 5. For some groups the target may be foreigners in their country, for others it will be a domestic attack, consider if you are in a high risk group and act accordingly. 6. Let someone away from the area know where you are and you're condition, if possible. 7. Be prepared for any escalation in your vicinity.
An example of this escalation was the 'multiple active shooter' scenario of the Mumbai Hotel bombings in India. People died both as a result of terrorist actions, and the police/military response to it.
For bodyguards it is not uncommon to have to enter a 'high risk' area, such as a restaurant, with a client. Whilst they recognise the risk and may prefer otherwise but this is where the meeting is to take place. The risk may be higher if it is a restaurant owned by American or western companies, or a place where 'foreigners' congregate in a moslem country. It also increases under these circumstances if alcohol is served on the premises.
Vigilence and a layered system of intelligence, surveillance, security staff and contingency planning in high risk environments, is necessary. Along with the simple things such as choosing a table away from the front entrance, an outside wall or glass windows will assist. Keep away from the dance floor or a focal point to the room, and near to an alternate exit other than the fire escape, unless you have sufficient staff to clear and keep secure that escape.
Be guided by your bodyguards. They are there for your protection. They will have contingency plans, first aid capabilities and communications.
