Tips for elderly or infirm travellers

1. Carry your medication in your hand luggage, as well as a change of clothes (including underwear) and some damp hand towels (known as wipes, wet ones or towlettes and often used when changing babies nappies).

2. Have sufficient medication for at  least one week, in case your baggage gets lost, as well as notes on your doctor and correct name of medication.

3. Have endorsed copies of all important documents such as tickets and passports in your luggage (also note numbers of travellers cheques) in case something happens to originals.

4. Send a copy of important documents, when holidaying, to the accomodation you're staying at, just before you leave home with a note to hold for... .

5. Drink plenty of  water

6. Dress in non restrictive clothing  to be comfortable on the flight

7. If possible move round during long flights, or flex your arms and legs.

8. Check with your local doctor to  see if you require a support stocking or medication to avoid  Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

9. Do not carry all your money in one place.

10. If you know you have trouble equalising your inner ear take some chewy lollies or gum for the ascent and descent, if possible.

Tips for unaccompanied minors

1. Arrange for the child to meet with the travel companion prior to  departure.

2. If the child is particularly young, ensure they have their favourite book, toy or game with them.

3. Do not rush or stress the child, some parents tend to dramatise the event making it more stressful for the child.  Explain the trip in positive terms as something to look forward to.

3. Label all medication, if  required.  Have sufficient, written, instructions and contact details of consulting physician.

4. For long flights, take a spare change of clothes and some damp hand towels.

5. If the child is a regular traveler, try to use the same companion each  time.

6. If possible have some sort of chewy lollie for the child, to help with equalising the inner ear on ascent and descent.

7. Do not give the child anything likely to encourage illness whilst travelling, such as chocolates, big drinks or excessive meals.

8. Make any allergies, special diets, or things that don't agree with the child, known well before time.  You may need to inform the airline.
