Townsville is situated on the East Coast of Queensland, Australia. It is the largest city outside South East Queensland. It lies approximately 1400 kms, or 18 hours driving time, North of the State Capital, Brisbane. It is a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, lying beside the Barrier Reef Marine National Park.
Some of the highlights of the town (apart from the race) include the glorious weather, The Strand (an esplanade with grass parks, and sandy beaches, as well as views towards Magnetic Island), Castle Hill and Jupiters Casino.
The major grouping of nightclubs lies along Flinders Street East. The major cafe hot spots are Gregory Street and Howitt Street, at their intersections with the Strand. For restaurants try the Palmer Street precinct (near the race track). Another good place for food is the Townsville RSL, on Charters Towers Road.
When searching for places to stay be aware that one time Thuringowa was listed as a separate city, but has been absorbed into Townsville, and covers the area to the West of the city.

Located just south of the Townsville CBD, the circuit
winds its way through Reid Park where specially constructed roads form
approximately 70 percent of the circuit. Set in a parkland style
reminiscent of the Albert Park street circuit in Melbourne, the
Townsville circuit proved to be a challenge in its inaugural year in
2009 and quickly became a favourite of the drivers.
