The biggest control factor for personal security may be the local law in the area where you require personal protection.  These laws vary from state to state in both the United States and Australia.

Within Australia concealed carry firearms are generally reserved for the protection of property, not the person.  So, when travelling with an armed close personal protection team it may be that they are armed ostensibly to protect your jewellery and valuables (bling) rather than your person.  Firearms laws are also a State by State consideration taking extensive time to obtain permits to travel carrying concealed weapons.  It is generally accepted that a person may only use deadly force when they fear for their lives or the life of another.

The justification of a need for firearms, within Australia, for close Personal Protection of other than high profile dignitaries, foreign heads of state and ambassadors is also a consideration.

In some overseas destinations firearms are mandatory, as well as the will to use them.

To add further confusion some Australian States have not yet defined Bodyguards.

For advice on the legal side of Bodyguards, go to our law reference section.

When travelling by air, be aware that most security will definately be unarmed.  The transport of weapons on aircraft as luggage brings it's own problems, which may detract from the effectiveness of security.  It is suggested for higher risk clients that extra prepositioned security meet them on arrival, outside the sterile area.

When travelling by sea consider the maritime law, and the local laws of the area you are travelling to.  For more on this follow this link to our maritime law references.

A security team will consist of a rotation of staff to provide 24hr protection, often with protection in depth.  Advance planning allows for the overlap of shift changes to coincide with higher risk activities such as travel.

Some celebrity clients have been likened to ADD children (not by our staff, but I liked the description!), this brings with it a challenge to ensure that security remains flexible enough to provide protection whilst maintaining fatigue management for staff.
