Security was once the province of the property owner, the employee, the night watchman, and the police.  The risk was seen as remote when the bank teller kept a gun in his cash drawer, the post master, the railway master and the businessman were armed.  The local policeman knew everyone and travelled with his trusty short truncheon in a special pocket of his trousers, and a not so reliable 6 shot revolver in a fold over holster.  Pubs closed at 6pm for tea.  Illicit drug use was an abstract idea.  Violence was usually limited to a short, sharp, alcohol fuelled fist fight where things like kicking a person when they were down was discouraged.  The next town was a big trip.
