Our staff are drawn from a very small pool of people within the general population.  These are people with character traits and skills that suite them to this role.  All our close personal protection staff have at least one specialist skill or area, as well as their general training.

Bodyguards require good reflexes, powers of observation and situational awareness, the ability to work as part of a team but still be an independant thinker, negotiation skills, flexibility, skills in operation of vehicles or vessels, knowledge of open hand and closed hand tactics, weapons, and the ability to meet the licensing and legislative requirements of the country or state where they are operating.  They also need knowledge of local customs, and at least some must have linguistic skills on foreign assignments.  They need to be able to blend in at a formal occassion, not interfere in matters that are not part of their area of expertise but remain vigilant.

Some roles require further specialist skills such as boatswains, shipboard close protection for staff, high risk escorts, counter terrorist, counter surveillance and specialist drivers.  Scenes such as the death of Lady Diana highlight the need for professional staff.

For a self assessment please read and consider the article in our threat assessment panel.

Kidnapping

Kidnapping has become one of the 'growth' industries of our time.  This includes piracy of the West African Coast and in the Indian ocean. Samalian pirates in the Gulf of Aiden have managed to conduct a lucrative trade in piracy and kidnapping, by seizing foreign vessels and ransoming the the crews, as well as diverting the cargo's.  The huge ransoms demands have been met, quietly, resulting in the finance of further activity.  This has seen the 'upgunning' of crews with some sophistication evident in the 'mother ships' and the co-ordination of attacks.  The successes have also emboldened the pirates to enlarge their area of operation.

Main suppliers for Ransom Insurance are Chubb, AIG, as well as Lloyds of London through the Travellers syndicate and Hiscox Syndicate.
