The level of threat is the biggest indicator of need for a bodyguard, executive protection, close personal protection, a protection team or personal protection assistance.
What can go wrong?
The worst scenario is the serious injury or death of the person being protected, closely followed by the death or injury of an innocent member of the public or a member of the security team.
How can things go wrong?
Poor security, clients who decline the advice of their security advisors or protection staff (with more difficult clients this can be a primary source of problems), poor intelligence, a downplaying of risk by clients (again, this can cause major difficulties), financial restrictions, actions of third parties unknown to either the client or the security team, using tired personnel who have lost their 'edge', interference by government agencies (including corrupt officials), an effective assessment of known capabilities by an 'enemy' prepared to take risks and accept losses. The last, but not least, factor is that variable known as 'luck'.
Security may be overwhelmed. Poorly trained operatives may fail to react in the small window of opportunity.
