Close Personal Protection is for people who feel threatened, or want to go about their business without interference.

Bodyguards are there to protect a person, or class of person.  The clients vary from school children, wives, businessman, staff and valued employee's to royalty, the wealthy, dignitaries, executives, politicians and celebrities.  Dignitaries and Executive Protection are considered the 'high end' of the market, generally.  Celebrities are seen as the most challenging.  The real role of the bodyguard is often as that well dressed companion, silent and watchfull, who blends into the crowd.

Large bodyguards are sometimes employed for their intimidation factor, especially in the celebrity protection role.  Smaller, more slender bodyguards may be more effective in many roles as they tend to blend into the background and not draw attention.  Female operatives are very effective in a social setting such as dinner parties where they are able to mingle without drawing attention.

For some the use of a bodyguard may be attractive for their vehicle driving skills, and local knowledge, with the added benefits of protection for the client and their family.  This is often the case in a low threat environment. In these circumstances the bodyguard may be regarded as a very well trained chauffeur.

Bodyguards may be a stand alone asset, part of a team of specialists or intergrated into a layered security plan.  Gender is less important than skills, training and ability.

The bodyguard role requires up to date intelligence, attention to detail and planning.  It may include driving, or travelling.  The bodyguard may be armed or unarmed.  He/she will work alone on low level risks (sometimes as much a driver as anything), or be part of a team for high risk clients, although some are still used as brawn to escort celebrities.  Fortunately, this role is passing more and more to uniformed security.

The bodyguards effectiveness can also be diminished through poor security and client or client staff actions.  Some of these may be unintentional, such as divulging the route, or because the bodyguard is 'doing nothing' and 'standing around' some clients see them as a bar attendant to fetch drinks or a man servant to carry bags.

On high risk jobs the norm for close personal protection operatives is a shift of approximately 6 hours plus overlaps, providing 24hr coverage through staff rotations.  Staff may work longer shifts where they provide depth to a high risk operation, such as a move - there may be a longer overlap in shifts for this purpose.  This is generally referred to as a Personal Protection Team, including support staff.

In this environment many roles become more intensive, driver bodyguards will remain with vehicles to prevent the interference with vehicles, placing of IEDs and electronic devices.  There will be daily briefings, routes will be surveyed, buildings cleared and the client will have multiple protectors.

On lower risk jobs a bodyguard may be asked to work up to 12 hours.  Over this time some degradation in performance may be expected.  Close personal protection requires a high level of alertness and situational awareness, to maintain this heightened perception continuously for 12 or more hours is exceptionally draining.

Whilst you may see the US Secret Service bodyguards throwing themselves over the president to protect him, a private bodyguard will either attempt to avoid a situation, negate the threat or remove the client from the situation as directly as possible.  In this scenario it is common for clients to be treated roughly, as the bodyguard/s strive to protect them.  Clients often do not recognise the danger as effectively as their security staff.

The Private group provide highly skilled staff to meet the level of threat

Some of the high risk area's for travel include Russia, Mexica & Latin America generally, China, India, parts of the phillipines, Nigeria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia (piracy) and the Indian Ocean sea lanes.  Africa and the Middle East present their own problems, depending on the area of travel.
